It was Thanksgiving here yesterday. Although it isn't a holiday for us in England, we do welcome the extra two days off that Joe gets, and the excuse for one extra traditional roast dinner each year!
This year we decided to do something different, so we booked a table for three at the Duling-Kurtz House. It's a traditional restaurant-come-inn that has lots of small and cozy dining rooms, blazing open fires and excellent service of excellent food.
We had a really nice table near a huge fireplace, and an open corner tucked behind our spot - perfect for a little girl who didn't want to sit down for the entire two hour meal!
I ate a traditional turkey dinner with stuffing, giblet gravy, sweet potatoes and sprouts - fantastic! Joe had is Duling-Kurtz favourite of filet mignon, cooked Pittsburg-style...this is one of the few restaurants in the area that can serve a steak this way...cooked a really, REALLY hot pan until seared black on the outside and medium rare on the inside. The piece de la resistance was the chocolate fondant cake dessert that Lucy and I shared. Check out the photos of Lucy enjoying it. I am not sure whether it was just the scrummy taste of the cake, or the fact that she got away with eating nothing else but a bit of bread roll for the entire meal. It isn't often that we let her get away with not eating her main course and still getting her dessert!
We were really proud of Lucy and her great behaviour, particularly as this is really quite a grown up restaurant (it doesn't have high chairs and the children's menu is really just adult portions made smaller). But she sat enjoying the conversation, watching the waiting staff bustling by and playing with her bag of goodies, quite happy to be part of it all. She especially liked her notebook and crayons, and her new Thomas stickers. The winning item in her bag was a card that we had sent to ourselves last week when Lucy was showing a lot of interest in the mail. It arrived a few days ago, so I tucked it away for such an occasion when I knew she would love to open the envelope and play with her post....it consumed at least 30 minutes of her time at the meal!
We came home and put Lucy to bed, then watched Frost/Nixon in front of the fire. A good film and some great acting. I had no idea that the David Frost that I watched on Sunday With Frost as a teenager had such a claim to international fame. Dad, I think you would like this film especially.
