Nene Valley Railway fun

The three of us had a really fun day out yesterday on the Nene Valley Railway. It's a restored steam railway which travels between the nearby villages of Yarwell and Wansford to Peterborough which is our nearest city. It's been recommended to us many times and we've so far avoided it for fear of crowds as it only opens on special weeks through the year, but yesterday was the perfect choice as it is the 'off season' but the sun was out but the crowds had stayed away.

Thomas took us up and down the railway a couple of times, and then another engine took us the 30 minute journey to Peterborough where we got off and spent a few hours in the city. We had lunch and browsed the shops as well as had a look at the stunning cathedral and prettier parts of the city centre. Lots of the city was spoiled as it became a sink town after WWII, but the old and pretty buildings can be picked out amongst the uglier ones.

The train we took had been beautifully restored and was a joy to travel on. We sat in the open carriages for part of it and in an individual cabin for the rest. It felt like travelling back in time and entering the world of CS Lewis or The Railway Children which was magical for us all. Lucy is very in to these kinds of stories now and loves to pretend that we are the characters from the books.

I thought this guy looked just like comedian Ronnie Corbett  ;-)

Lucy loves writing in her little notebooks. She makes her own books and will practice her letters and sketches. Her writing is really very good!
