Weekend in North Yorks

We had a lovely time with Joe's parents this past weekend. We drove up Friday night and had a good journey (locking ourselves out of the house beforehand and having an almost 3 hour wait for the locksmith was a sour start to the weekend but we got over it).

We visited Joe's Grandma Mavis a couple of times, not having seen her since last August. She was on good form, actually to me she looked younger than last year and was of course delighted to see us. She has a hearing aid so Lucy's excited squeals took her a bit of time to adjust to!

Joe and I had a treat - we left Lucy with Grandma and Grandpa for the afternoon and headed out for a pub lunch. I had one of my pub favourites, scampi and chips and peas, and Joe had a monster BLT with melted Wensleydale cheese (of Wallace and Gromit fame....Wensleydale is where Joe's parents live). Afterwards we wandered around the sweet market town of Masham and enjoyed a stop at the sweet shop, stocked up on childhood sweeties including gems, white mice and liquorice. We weren't ready to go back so headed up to a stunning country house hotel called Swinton Castle and had tea in the drawing room - very posh!

Joe's parents are great with Lucy and she adores them. She also adores their pet dog Tilly who is a Norfolk terrier and sadly quite elderly and a little unwell these days. Brenda is wondering how she can keep her alive forever based on the fact that her and Lucy are inseparable!

Brenda and Tony's neighbour has a grandson of 8 called Matthew and he came over to visit a couple of times. He's a lovely lad and is quite taken with Lucy, bringing her his hand-me-down videos and patiently playing with her princess dolls with her. He is an only child and clearly loves the idea of having a younger sister :)
