It's Wednesday already...where do the days go? Some drag endlessly and I count the hours, but overall the weeks fly by and already autumn is here. This time last year I was anxiously and feverishly packing to move house. It seems like a long time ago, this house has become very much our home and we are so settled here. But the feeling of that pressure to get everything packed while having Lucy to keep occupied at the same time still sends shivers down my spine when I hear of people moving!
As the anniversary of our first year in Walnut Street approaches I am amazed at what we have achieved in such little time since moving in. The previous owners had lived here for almost 40 years, raised a family here and were well into their retirement years when they left. That coupled with the house being nearly 90 years old meant that there was a lot of decorating and maintenance work to be done!
Our goal in our first year was to get key rooms in the house decorated to our taste (such as the living and dining rooms) plus an essential upgrade of the electrics. We never expected to get as much done as we have - not only some decorating and electric upgrade, but also a newly renovated kitchen, almost every room re-painted and definite plans set for a new deck and patio in the back yard this winter. Not to mention general maintenance and repairs like adding new window and door locks, repairing a leaky bilko door to the basement and replacing curtains.
We have certainly made the most of being here in the Borough and take regular walks into town, to the park and library. We almost always eat out in town on date night, and most of Lucy's activities are based here and walkable. The mileage on my car hasn't grown as much this year and the expensive pushchair we invested in when Lucy was born has been well-used!
We love it here. We love the house and it's character, the room sizes and layout. The garden and porch have lived up to their promise of being shady in summer and fun to play in. We love the neighbourhood for being quiet and leafy, tucked away and private but also close to the action in town. I can see us living here for as long as we live in the States....however long that will be!
